Fishing Report and Gift Ideas

Report on fly fishing in Western North Carolina and gift ideas for everyone.

As we wind down the year the trout fishing has ramped up with incredible fishing taking place in our local waters.   Delayed harvest is in effect on the Nantahala and Tuckasegee Rivers. With unseasonably warm temperatures during the day, the fish are active, and anglers are experiencing trips of a lifetime.  With very little rain, our water levels remain low and extremely clear.  Focus should be made on leader and tippet selection.  We recommend going with 6X to 7X to get the job done.

A recent trip to the Upper Nantahala was extremely successful once we went to smaller nymphs.  Size 16 to 20 got the job done.  While we found plenty of live stoneflies in the rocks, the fly of choice was small simple nymphs set up with 6 and 7X tippet. Scout for rising fish and switch to dry dropper rigs.  Again, smaller dry files were the answer.

Before hitting the water be sure to check the flows and generation schedules.  If too high, do not risk it. The risk is not worth the reward. The trout will be there when you come back.  With the chilly water and cooler temperatures, it does not take long for hypothermia to set in.
