January 29, 2022 - Safety and Fishing Report

Report on current fishing conditions and upcoming shop events.

Greetings,

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe.   Three weekends in a row we have been impacted by winter storms.  In addition, we are seeing some of the coldest temperatures of the year.  Wading safety should be the first thing that anyone hitting the water be considering.  We have seen many posts about concerns about waders filling up with water and what to do.  Number one - do not wade in any location that challenges your safety.  Number two - Do not panic, Number three, there are less people on the water so the chances of someone seeing you in distress are less, plan ahead.

The Team at Fish Tales wants you to be safe. This is the time of year where one misstep can lead to an extremely dangerous situation. A fall, slide, or misjudging the depth of the water leads waders being filled with water and the need to take immediate action. Couple of safety tips.

1. Let someone know where and what times you will be fishing. There is limited cell phone service in many of our areas.
2. Have extra clothes ready including gloves and hats
3. Blanket
4. Fire starting tools
5. Snacks/Drinks
If you have fallen in the water, get your clothes off, get to a warm location and wrap yourself in the blanket and get dry clothes on including a hat.
Hypothermia can strike quickly and may lead to death if immediate action is not taken. Please be safe on the water. Seek emergency help if you have signs of hypothermia. Minutes count.
For more information on the reconignition and treatment of hypothermia visit https://www.mayoclinic.org/.../diagnosis.../drc-20352688..

As far as flies,  midges sizes 18-22 appear to be the ticket.  Smaller flies, slow down, get to the bottom.  Light tippet, look at using 6X to 8X or  lighter.  Water has been low and clear.  The fish are eating slower and move very little for their meal.  A few inches may make the difference in a strike or not.

Our free fly classes start Feb. 24th.  Give the shop a call to reserve your spot.

Stay safe on the water,

Fish Tales
